Reach for the Stars!!

Reach For The Stars!! is a pledge based reading incentive program that works like a read-a-thon. We put books into the hands of students and reward them for reading. At the same time, it provides the school or organization cash and/or books.

What is the goal of the program?
The goal of Reach for the Stars!! is for the children to read, or be read to for 300 minutes over a two week period of time. This is an average of 30 minutes per weekday as recommended by educational experts.

Who can participate?
This program is designed to benefit any organizational group, such as schools, individual classrooms, clubs, preschools, church groups, youth groups, homeschool groups, charities, businesses and public libraries.

How does the program work?
Parents and children ask friends, family, people they know (NO door-to-door), to sponsor them and encourage them in their daily reading by pledging any amount. Ask your organization if corporate sponsors are available.

How do the kids benefit?
They develop the important habit of daily reading! They receive Usborne books and other prizes for participating! The Reach for the Stars program helps children discover the joy of reading and gives them the opportunity to choose their very own Usborne books to keep!

How can your organization benefit?
Minimum 100% return on student pledges – in form of books and/or cash!

We do all the work – Hassle Free – just choose your free books!

Earn free award winning educational books of your choice from over 1800 Usborne and Kane/Miller titles for classrooms and libraries!

Kids earn free books of their choice too – so excitement about reading extends beyond the program dates!

10 Tips for Reading Aloud to Children

  1. Remember: The art of listening is acquired.
  2. The first time you read a book, discuss the cover illustration.
  3. Read slowly enough or the child to build mental pictures.
  4. Use plenty of expression, change your tone of voice, and adjust your pace to fit the story.
  5. Encourage involvement; invite the child to turn pages for you.
  6. Ask "What do you think is going to happen next?"
  7. During repeat readings of a predictable book, stop at key phrases and allow the child to provide the words.
  8. If you can't finish a chapter, find a suspenseful spot at which to stop.
  9. Paper, crayons and pencils allow active children to keep their hands busy while listening.
  10. Reading aloud comes naturally to very few people. To do it with ease takes practice. It's worth it!
